8 reasons to go Hiking Piatra Craiului
If you’re for the first time in Romania and are a mountain enthusiast, you might wonder which trail to go for. For example, Hiking Piatra Craiului can be a great idea, especially if you’re really passionate about diversity, flora and fauna. We personally love this mountain so much that we have to share some of its beauty with you, but more importantly give you some reasons to go there.
1. Easy access
If you want to go Hiking Piatra Craiului, you should know that you have multiple ways to get there – by car, train or bus. The massif is located in the central part of the country so from whichever direction you are heading the road is not a strenuous one. For example you can take the road Zărnești – Fântana lui Botorog – Curmătura.
2. Varied trails
Whether you’re up for long hours of Hiking Piatra Craiului or just want to walk and admire the scenery in Piatra Craiului you have multiple options. Circuits, easy trekking or hiking trails, sections with shrubs, grooves or exposed ridge area, you can find them all in this massif. And if you’re eager for more, Piatra Craiului winter is a challenge for any mountaineer. Whatever the season or the route you choose, you set off properly equipped. Technical boots, a rain jacket and a comfortable backpack, and if you have plans for winter, the right boots and fangs are a must.
3. Biking, climbing or paragliding trails
If the mountain attracts you for other sports then Piatra Craiului is the perfect destination if you want to go biking, paragliding or climbing. Zărnești’s cliffs await you with multiple climbing routes of varying degrees of difficulty, and from here you can also pedal to the Curmătura hut.
4. Accommodation
Huts, refuges or camping. If you want to spend the night on the mountain, then there are many options. Depending on the planned route you can stay at the huts – at the base of the mountain or on the mountain, you can pitch your tent in the specially arranged areas or sleep at one of the many refuges: Ascuțit, Grind 1 and 2, Diana, Șpârla, Șaua Funduri or Speranțelor. If you sleep in a tent or hut be prepared with a warm sleeping bag, the weather on the ridge can be changeable and the wind can become sharp very quickly.
5. Clear water
On the ridge portion of the ridge it’s harder to get water but at the base of the mountain and on the middle ridge you’ll find clear springs with cold water good for stocking up. On the Prăpăstiilor Valley (in “Prăpăstiile Zărneștiului”) you will find, on clear days, the clearest water. Coming down from the mountain.
6. Protected species
Who hasn’t heard of the Pietrei Craiului Carnation? An endemic species found predominantly on the rocky ridges and crags of the massif. You’ll also encounter columbine flowers and other alpine plants on the massif. And if you walk along the ridge from one end to the other, you’re sure to see black goats – very accustomed to your presence.
7. Spectacular scenery in every season;
From white rocks in the middle of summer to frozen ridges in winter. Piatra Craiului is a massif with breathtaking scenery. Whether you’re on the ridge or admiring it in all its beauty from the base. Or from the surrounding mountains you’ll always find some great scenery here.
